A BRIEF HISTORY OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN
The term biophilia, derived from the Greek words philia (love) and bio (nature), means "the love of nature or life." It highlights humanity’s innate attraction to the natural world, a connection built over centuries of living in harmony with nature. This bond is deeply ingrained in our biology. One of the earliest examples of biophilic design can be found in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife Queen Amytis, the gardens were designed to mimic the green hills and valleys of her homeland. This ancient wonder is an early testament to the power of connecting with nature in our built environments.
In the 1970s, Erich Fromm explored the idea of humans’ passionate love for life, and Edward O. Wilson later coined the term biophilia in the 1980s, noting how urbanization was disconnecting people from the natural world. With rapid migration to urban areas, biophilic design is more important than ever for our health and well-being, especially in the built environment.
Biophilic design principles have been shown to improve many spaces we live and work in today. It not only enhances the quality of life but also contributes to our mental and physical health. For interior designers, incorporating biophilic elements—like nature-inspired art—creates an immediate welcoming and calming effect, offering potential buyers a true sense of connection to a home.
